The Past

When the pits closed the security of employment, education and the environment in Dawdon diminshed. Dawdon as a mining community was dependent upon work from the coal mine or pit. High unemployment led to low moral with 'Community Spirit' almost becoming a thing of the past. Some residents in Dawdon were committed to turning the negatives into positives and set about trying to rebuild and encourage the community.

Safer

The distribution of safety marking equipment was a step in the right direction for increasing residents awarness of home security. The aim being to increase the identfication rate of any stolen property by the police.

Greener

Initially a great cause of concern in the community was the amount of litter and dumping taking place in Hazel Dene. We as a community aided by Tidy Ted (Tidy Easington District, Seahm Town Council and Rotary Club) did our first Spring Clean filling four skips. We realised that something was needed more than a spring clean and decided to tackle the problem but this would need more planning time and effort.

Healthier

Recognising as a result of many years of neglect part of which was peoples personal well being many diseases and conditions went unchecked amongst these were heart, respiratory and diabetic conditions. These problems had to be tackled and dealt in conjunction with the professionals. Some help was given by Seaham Health Forum but the problems seemed to get larger the more we examined them.
