Easington Colliery:

We are situated on the Durham Coast approximately midway between Sunderland and Hartlepool. Sinking of the shafts for the colliery began in 1899. Coal output began in 1910. A thriving community of mineworkers homes, shops, work and leisure structures grew up around the colliery. It was a strong, close-knit and friendly place to live. However, the pit closed in 1993 with the loss of 1400 jobs. It was subsequently demolished in 1994. It left behind a legacy of severe economic and social deprivation. In fact Easington Colliery is currently ranked 4th in the deprivation level in England. It has been designated an EU Objective 2 area.

However, the District of Easington through funding channels such as SRB and Rechar have recently completed the first phase of a ten year regeneration programme. This has included exterior improvements to 10 streets of the terraced houses in the A and B streets, and an upgrade of the commercial sector shop fronts, paving and lighting, plus environmental and landscaping schemes. The C streets area has also been the subject of improvement with work largely carried out by Bradford and Northern Housing Association. THE WORK GOES ON.
