The Reverend Henry George Liddell, Rector of ST. MARY'S CHURCH, EASINGTON, was born at Ravensworth Castle, grandson of Thomas Liddell and Margaret, daughter of Sir William Bowes of Streatlam Castle. Henry married Charlotte Lyon, fourth daughter of the Hon. Thomas Lyon and niece of John BOWES LYON, 9th Earl of Strathmore. Their son, Henry George Liddell was Dean of Oxford and father of ALICE PLEASANCE LIDDELL, the original inspiration for Alice in Wonderland. In his biography Dean Henry describes a visit in 1832 to his fathers new abode at Easington, situated two miles from the sea, its church serving as a landmark for sailors. This was his father’s home until he gave up his clerical work in 1862

Charlotte Lyon who married Henry George Liddell, RECTOR OF EASINGTON was the daughter of Hon. Thomas Lyon, third son of the 8th Earl of Strathmore and Mary, daughter of Farrer Wren of Binchester. John Lyon, the 9th Earl assumed the name of Bowes on his marriage to Mary Eleanour Bowes. It was from this line that Queen Elizabeth II was descended, through her mother, the Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. A crest is displayed in SEATON HOLME showing the Lyon - Liddell marriage.
